Student Internships are available throughout the year at the Independent Institute.


Publicity Assistant

The Independent Institute is currently seeking a Publicity Assistant or Coordinator with 0–2 years of experience in media relations to report to our Director of Publicity. Candidates must be highly motivated, outgoing, and organized. Must possess excellent time-management and follow up skills and be able to deliver under tight deadlines. An interest in news media and public policy is essential. Writing and editing skills a plus.

The Publicity Assistant will aid the Publicity Department in promoting our books, reports, authors, and policy forums as well as in tracking our media coverage.

Responsibilities may include:

  • tracking, updating, and archiving all media coverage
  • booking interviews and developing relationships with the press
  • updating and maintaining media lists (print, broadcast, web, blog, etc.)
  • proofing/editing/writing press releases, galley letters, and other content
  • working with opinion page editors to place op-eds
  • creating and placing calendar announcements of upcoming events
  • using basic HTML to update and maintain Institute news on our website
  • coordinating review copy mailings for books and reports as well as handling all one-off requests from the media
  • creating mock-ups of print clippings and managing their assembly
  • providing media coverage status reports to other departments as needed
  • conducting web research and developing relationships with online and social media
  • managing ProfNet account

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, political science, or a related field. Proficiency with Excel, Word, and Filemaker is essential. Experience with InDesign, Cision, Nexis, PR Newswire, ProfNet, and basic HTML preferred.

Salary: $32–36,000+, plus benefits, DOE.
