The widely cited estimate that one in five female college students is a victim of sexual assault is based on surveys that can be very misleading – because they suffer from self-selection bias, as they do not involve a random sample of students, and they define sexual assault very broadly. One thing is clear, however: campus sexual assault is associated largely with alcohol consumption.
