John Joseph Wallis is Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland and Research Associate for the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Weingast), American Economic Growth and Standards of Living Before the Civil War (with Robert Gallman), and In The Shadow of Violence: The Problem of Development in Limited Access Societies (with Douglass C.
