Research Fellow Robert Whaples, editor of the Independent Institute book Pope Francis and the Caring Society shares his thoughts on the world's most influential environmentalist, Pope Francis. The book is an answer to the Pope's call for a dialogue on the environment, economics and charity. Whaples speaks about capitalism being able to help lift people out of poverty and help clean up the environment because of the incentives of wealth creation. Protecting and securing property rights is a method to preserve and protect the environment because humans will nurture things they personally own. Whaples also gives examples of philanthropists in the United States have helped many worthwhile causes as a direct result of capitalism.
