Sr. Fellow Bill Evers, director of Independent Institute's Open Letter to Suspend AB5, talks with guest host Katy Grimes about the latest news on California's AB5. The law took effect during the pandemic and requires freelance "gig" workers to become employees of companies instead of remaining independent contractors. Various exemptions have been granted but Uber and Lyft drivers and other delivery drivers will be forced to give up their independence when determining where and when they work. With unemployment soaring during the pandemic, drivers are needed more than ever to fill essential tasks while people shelter in place. Evers discusses other occupations affected by the law, as well as a ballot initiatives and lawsuits which seek to undue AB5 and challenge its constitutionality.
