OAKLAND, Calif. June 22, 2009Applications for the 2010 Sir John M. Templeton Fellowships Essay Contest are now available. College students and junior faculty are encouraged to submit essays responding to the following quote by renowned political economist Frederic Bastiat:
Everyone wants to live at the expense of the state. They forget that the state wants to live at the expense of everyone.
This year, three winners will be selected in the Junior Faculty Division to receive a total of $21,500 and three from the Student Division will be awarded a total of $5,000. Winners will also receive assistance in publishing their essays as well as a two-year subscription to The Independent Review.
Submissions for the 2010 Templeton Fellowships Essay Contest are due by May 3, 2010 and will be reviewed by an independent panel of judges. Winners of the 2009 contest will be announced this fall and winners of the 2010 contest will be announced next fall.
Administered by the Independent Institute and funded by the John Templeton Foundation, the annual contest seeks to encourage students and young professors to examine the meaning and significance of economic and personal liberty.
