Independent Institute Wins Three National Book Awards
Priceless and No War for Oil Receive Top Honors

May 13, 2013, Oakland, CA— The Independent Institute is proud to announce that two of our recent books have received top honors by the Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPY) and the prestigious Eric Hoffer Award for Excellence.

Priceless: Curing the Healthcare Crisisby John C. Goodman, Independent Institute Research Fellow and President of the National Center for Policy Analysis, is the 2013 Eric Hoffer Award Winner for Culture and also earned the Silver Medal from the Independent Publisher’s Book Awards (IPPY).

No War for Oil: U.S Dependency and the Middle East by Ivan Eland, Senior Fellow at the Independent Institute, received the Gold Medal from IPPY for excellence in Current Events (Foreign Affairs/Military).

Both books are steeped in practical and principled approaches to critical issues facing our nation—the nature of war and the motives that drive our foreign policy, and ability for individuals to chart the course of our own healthcare. Priceless and No War for Oil offer unparalleled research and analysis essential to an informed debate about the proper scope of our international policies and personal freedoms.

Priceless: Curing the Healthcare Crisis demonstrates how normal market forces have been eliminated from American healthcare, making it almost impossible to solve problems the way they are solved in other markets. Relying on a common-sense understanding of how markets work, author John C. Goodman reveals how healthcare is a “complex system” that cannot be managed by government from the top down. True reform requires liberating doctors and patients by allowing them to interact in innovative ways to help meet unique individual medical needs.

No War for Oil: U.S Dependency and the Middle East enables educators, government officials, the media, and citizens to sort through the conventional claims about oil and the use of military power to secure it. Ivan Eland concludes that the use of U.S. military power to secure oil is not only unneeded and costly, but is counterproductive to U.S. security. Realizing that the alleged need to secure oil with military power is a canard, withdrawing U.S. forces from the Persian Gulf would enhance security, increase access to inexpensive energy resources, and help restore financial solvency for America.
