California Gov. Gavin Newsom signaled that he would enact statewide rent control if a new bill (AB 1482) reaches his desk. Unfortunately, the legislation, which limits rent increases to 5 percentage points above the rate of inflation, would hinder the real solution to the states housing problem: lifting government restrictions that thwart the supply of new housing.
