In March 2018, the Chinese Communist Party amended its constitution to eliminate term limits on the presidency, thereby clearing the way for President Xi Jinping to remain in office indefinitely. Xis political dominance, however, will have less effect on whether his country becomes a global superpower that rivals the United States, than will Chinas slowing economic growth, adverse demographic trends, and rising debt.
