An online survey conducted by the authors shows that both college students and the public express low levels of support for a range of controversial speech on campuses—including denying the Holocaust, justifying terrorist attacks, denying that climate change is caused by human actions, banning all religions, and claiming that vaccinations cause autism. Moreover, there are few consistent significant differences between the attitudes of college students and the broader public.
