Along with his substantive contributions to the field of economic history, Douglass C. North should be remembered for building bridges between academic disciplines, exhorting his colleagues to rethink their assumptions, and convincing young scholars that they too could make a worthwhile mark on the economics profession. Among the reasons for his great success was his unflagging self-confidence.
