The U.S. Supreme Court has been grabbing the headlines since the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and then the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett. The confirmation hearings have called Judge Barrett's faith into question and Senator Amy Klouchar went so far as to call the hearings a “sham.” Also top of mind is the question of “court packing,” even though Vice President Biden will not answer questions about his intentions.

Sr. Fellow Williamson Evers appears on The Education Exchange podcast with Paul E. Peterson to discuss California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s veto of AB 331, a bill that would have mandated a course in ethnic studies as a California high school graduation requirement, starting in 2029-30. Newsom said the model curriculum was unbalanced and needed extensive revision. The curriculum would have taught students that capitalism is not a system of private property and investment, but that capitalism is merely a system of exploitation of labor. This is a similar view held by Karl Marx.

California legislators are attempting to mandate that public K-12 schools teach a highly-divisive “ethnic studies” curriculum with Marxist underpinnings and socialist conclusions. If left unchecked, this false curriculum won't stay in California. It will be exported to other states and communities across the country.
