“Marx and the Continuing Influence of Socialism”
Benjamin Powell
Texas Tech University
This speech was given on November 6, 2023, during a Hillsdale College CCA seminar on “Great Economists.”
This Capitol Hill event focuses on one of the most pressing topics of our time—the Covid lockdowns and the future of educational freedom in the West. Hosted by Senator Rand Paul, Dr. Scott Atlas and education expert and author James Tooley shed much-needed light on the harms inflicted on our children through the lockdowns and mandates and how the virus exposed the deep-rooted problems in America's state-run education system.
Dr. Atlas interviews Senator Rand Paul on exposing the egregious malfeasance and cover-up by government, public health bureaucrats, and university scientists in the COVID pandemic. They discuss COVID's origins, NIH funding gain-of-function research in Wuhan, conflicts-of-interest involving government officials receiving royalties from pharmaceutical companies, and more.
So we don’t have to worry about the debt ceiling until after the next presidential inauguration in January 2025. What was all the hullabaloo about, and was it worth it? And while we’re talking about money, is it ok to stop worrying about the U.S. banking system now? We will discuss these matters and more in today’s episode of Independent Outlook.
On January 12, 2023, family, friends, and associates gathered to celebrate and be inspired by the life of David J. Theroux, including tributes by Benjamin Powell and son Paul Theroux, an overview of David’s life by his wife Mary, and stirring messages from Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone and George Gilder. The evening concluded with a look ahead to a future bright with opportunity.
The Biden administration, spooked by inflation, sets out to change the definition of “recession,” apparently in hopes that terminology will ease the impact of disastrous spending and monetary policy. Meanwhile, the new semiconductor pork bill, “The Chips Act” subsidizes big business at the expense of taxpayers and consumers. Also, Dr. Fauci now tells us that if he had it to do all over again, he’d insist on even more draconian lockdowns and restrictions.
A new bill subsidizing the U.S. semiconductor industry is unnecessary says Sr. Fellow Benjamin Powell. The only reason more products are able to use semiconductors is because of foreign trade, not government handouts and playing favorites, he says. The $52 billion subsidy bill is just a pig dressed up in high-tech clothes, Powell writes in an Op-Ed in The Hill.
